Nicko’s Story: The Best Dog in the Whole World
When we met Nicko at Saving Grace, she was underweight, recovering from shotgun wounds, and carried herself with quiet dignity. She crossed one paw over the other—something she did for the rest of her life—and looked up at us with calm, knowing eyes. I was hesitant to adopt, but in that moment, I knew she was the one.

From the ride home, with her head resting on my knee, Nicko became the best decision I’ve ever made. She was gentle, loyal, and full of love. She helped me slow down, connect with others, and find joy in everyday moments.
To me, “rescue” means more than saving a life—it means gaining a companion who brings untold joy into yours. It means sharing your chicken biscuit, laughing at a cold nose on your cheek, and realizing that a stray mutt from the woods is actually the best dog in the whole world.
Nicko passed away on June 18, 2025, after a brave fight with lung cancer. We celebrated her life with hikes, parties, and quiet porch sits. I still find her hairs on my clothes and smile through the tears.
On August 29th, we adopted a puppy from Saving Grace. One day, I’ll tell her all about Nicko. She won’t understand the words—but she’ll feel the love.
Nicko didn’t just change our lives—she made them whole.
