Fix What’s Broken: Clinic Edition

Happy Annie

Within six weeks of losing our Dutch shepherd rescue Hans, we were at Saving Grace to find another companion. We had intended to wait after having 8 wonderful years with Hans, but we were ready. "Tonks", a lab-shepherd mix, was introduced to us frozen with fear and in need of deep healing.

Within six weeks of losing our Dutch shepherd rescue Hans, we were at Saving Grace to find another companion. We had intended to wait after having 8 wonderful years with Hans, but we were ready. “Tonks”, a lab-shepherd mix, was introduced to us frozen with fear and in need of deep healing. We saw a chance to love and encourage her to come out of her shell, offer respite in a calm home as two retirees with no kids or other pets as distractions. Without hesitation, we entered into the Foster-to-Adopt program, named her Annie and took her home. After three months and the completion of her three treatments, we became her forever family.

It was clear she had a terrible past and needed time to trust and recognize she was safe. She took everything as a challenge with a flee-response that included Annie trying to find a way out of our fenced backyard; she scaled twice and came back. We slowly earned her trust, and patiently guided her as she became more at ease with us and her new surroundings with every passing day. Annie is now the playful, mischievous lab we expected. We start our day with massages, stretches and tummy rubs. Her wagging tail and kisses are all the evidence that she is a happy dog. She is dedicated to us and us to her. Annie is home!

Heartworm disease is transmitted by infected mosquitoes — it is not contagious, and it is never a dog’s fault. Without treatment, it can be deadly, but with care, dogs like Tonks can go on to live happy, healthy lives. Monthly preventatives are critical to prevention, and your support helps Saving Grace provide treatment to dogs who arrive already infected and in need of healing.

Help us cover heartworm treatments for another dog like Annie, who can find his/her way to a new home!
