From Grief to Gratitude: How Volunteering Changed Everything
After losing our beloved dog Jiro in December 2020, I wasn’t sure I could open my heart again. But in summer 2021, I decided to volunteer with Saving Grace—and it changed my life.

I found my place on the Friday night Dog House shift, where Amy and Paula welcomed me and taught me the ropes. What started as a way to process grief became a source of joy, purpose, and community. Every Friday, no matter how tired I am, I leave the farm feeling lighter and more fulfilled.
In November 2021, my wife Emily and I adopted Arlo (formerly Bobbie), a spirited tripod I met while volunteering. He helped heal my heart. Later, we fostered several dogs—including three puppy sisters—and eventually “foster failed” with Freya, who brought new energy to our home and to Arlo.
We’ve continued fostering, especially medical cases, and each dog has left a mark on our hearts. Jiro, Arlo, Freya, and every foster have made our family whole. They keep us grounded, joyful, and moving forward.
Volunteering, fostering, and adopting aren’t always easy—but they’re absolutely worth it. Saving Grace gave me the chance to become a better version of myself, surrounded by a community of people who care deeply. If you’re grieving or searching for connection, I encourage you to get involved. The love you give comes back tenfold.
