Double the Love, Double the Lives Saved
When one longtime adopter offered to match $10,000 in donations, the Saving Grace community came together — and met the challenge in record time, proving that rescue truly is a team effort.

We spoke with her about what first drew her to Saving Grace, why she believes in the mission so deeply and how others can join in to make a difference.
1. What first connected you to Saving Grace, and what made the mission resonate with you personally?
We hadn’t heard of Saving Grace until our daughter came home from a company outing there saying, “You’ve got to go see this place – it’s so cool!” We went to an Open House soon after, and later that year our daughter adopted a puppy. While they were going through the adoption process at Saving Grace, a bird flew down and landed on their youngest son’s head. That’s how their new puppy got the name Birdie.
A few months later, we lost one of our dogs to congestive heart failure. We had always been a two-dog family, so while driving to Florida for a family vacation – still in tears – we started scrolling through the Saving Grace website. One striking dog caught our eye. I emailed almost immediately, but he’d already been adopted. A few days later, he was back on the site. It felt meant to be.
We arrived at Saving Grace first thing on a Monday morning in the pouring rain to meet him, and he captured our hearts right away. Because he was heartworm positive, we fostered him until his treatment was done. When he was healthy, we adopted him officially. Our vet was thrilled to meet him – a “Black Golden,” part Lab and part Golden Retriever, with the best of both breeds. His name is Fozzie, and he’s been our shadow ever since.
Later, we adopted Maizy, a shy dog who’d had a rough start and was terrified of people. My grandson said, “We can help her,” so we did. And Fozzie helped teach her how to be a dog. Now she’s full of personality, and the two of them are inseparable.
2. What inspired you to make a $10,000 matching gift to the Saving Grace Saves: Rescue is a Team Effort campaign?
Our Saving Grace dogs have been such a blessing. We wanted other people to experience that same joy.
We started volunteering by doing laundry for the rescue – hauling home big bags of towels and sheets to wash. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was something we could do. Later, as health issues limited our physical volunteering, we realized we could give financially instead. This matching gift felt like another way to be part of the team.
3. How does it feel knowing your gift is saving lives and inspiring others to give?
We’ve always believed that matching campaigns motivate people. When you know your donation is doubled, it feels powerful – like you’re truly part of something bigger.
We also know the money goes where it’s needed most – to medical care for dogs that come in sick or injured. But it’s not just about money. There are so many ways to help: socializing dogs, cleaning, sitting in the puppy pen, or just being there. You don’t have to have deep pockets or a dozen dogs to make a difference. Every small act matters. Rescue really is a team effort – between the dogs, the people who love them, and everyone who gives a little bit of themselves.
4. What role does Saving Grace play in our community?
From the first moment I saw the mural on one of the buildings, I thought, “This place captures what rescue is all about.” Saving Grace is so visible and active in the community – visiting organizations, hosting events, and spreading the message that every dog deserves a chance.
My husband once brought puppies from Saving Grace to a men’s church group he was part of. Watching those guys melt over tiny puppies was unforgettable. They ended up making a group donation. That’s what Saving Grace does – it brings out compassion in people.
5. What would you say to others who are considering how they can help?
Take the first step. Don’t wait for the perfect time – just try something. Maybe volunteering isn’t the right fit, but you can donate or spread the word. Everyone has a role. And if you get too old to clean kennels, give money instead! It all counts, and it all matters.
6. Any closing thoughts you’d like to share?
I just want to thank Saving Grace’s founder, Molly, for having the vision and determination to make Saving Grace what it is today. She had a dream, and she made it work – a lesson for all of us.
Every gift makes an impact.
