Beyond Three Legs: Phoebe’s Story

Two years ago, Jen's family lost their lost beloved dog at the same time her husband was battling cancer. When life finally slowed down, they knew they wanted to adopt from Saving Grace, and so they started looking. 3-legged Phoebe caught her eye but her son wanted a puppy, so they went on site for an appt thinking they were going home with someone different.

Two years ago, Jen’s family lost their lost beloved dog at the same time her husband was battling cancer. When life finally slowed down, they knew they wanted to adopt from Saving Grace, and so they started looking. 3-legged Phoebe caught her eye but her son wanted a puppy, so they went on site for an appt thinking they were going home with someone different.

Phoebe clearly felt differently, “The moment we sat down with her, she climbed into my lap and didn’t move. It felt like she had already chosen us.”

Prior to her arrival at Saving Grace, Phoebe suffered from a leg with no feeling and had even chewed off her own paw. Because of the Saving Grace Clinic and our Medical Foster program, we provided the urgent amputation and veterinary care she needed and she went home with Jen and her family.

Her journey wasn’t easy, it took her awhile to acclimate and bond with her family, but they were committed to learning about her breed mix, getting help from a trainer, and working through the trauma of her past and slowly things started to improve.

If you met Phoebe today, you would never know what she had been through. She is a celebrity in her neighborhood, plays fetch, chases squirrels, runs along mountain trails and chases seagulls at the shore with more enthusiasm than most dogs with four legs.

“Phoebe may only have three legs, but she doesn’t let that define her. She is strong, joyful, and deeply loved. We are incredibly grateful to Saving Grace for bringing her into our lives. She didn’t just fill the quiet in our home—she transformed it. Phoebe is family. And we truly can’t imagine our lives without her.“
