Badger’s Second Chance

When Badger arrived at Saving Grace, he had already endured more than most dogs should. He had been hit by a car, suffering from a shattered pelvis and severe injuries to his back leg. As he recovered from those physical wounds, another challenge became clear: Badger was also heartworm positive.

\When Badger arrived at Saving Grace, he had already endured more than most dogs should. He had been hit by a car, suffering from a shattered pelvis and severe injuries to his back leg. As he recovered from those physical wounds, another challenge became clear: Badger was also heartworm positive.

About a year ago, Badger’s adopter was searching for a companion for her Australian Shepherd, Hayate. While browsing the Saving Grace website, one dog immediately caught her eye. “I fell in love with Badger at first sight,” Izzy recalls.

What started as a visit to simply meet Badger quickly became something more. During their walk, a passing car startled him so badly that he ran beneath her legs seeking safety. It was then that she learned about Badger’s accident and the challenges he had already overcome. “It was at that point that I knew I was going to bring this dog home to love him,” Izzy said.

When she expressed interest in adopting him, Saving Grace explained that Badger still needed time to recover from his injuries—and treatment for heartworm disease.

“I was floored that Saving Grace offered to treat him free of charge and that I would be able to adopt him afterward. It was honestly a blessing.”

Over the following months, Badger received the lifesaving care he needed. Throughout the process, the Saving Grace medical team provided guidance, answered questions, and supported his recovery. “Each time I brought him in for treatment, the staff remembered Badger and treated him so sweetly. You could definitely tell that everyone at Saving Grace cares deeply about their dogs.” Today, the difference is remarkable.

The shy dog recovering from injuries and heartworm disease has transformed into a happy, energetic companion. Badger and Hayate spend their days running, playing, and enjoying life together. “He’s gone from this shy dog that was terrified of cars, recovering from injuries and heartworm, to a dog that runs all over the place, loves everyone, plays in the backyard with his family, and loves cuddling on the couch,” Izzy said.

Badger’s journey is a reminder of just how much can change when dogs are given the treatment, care, and second chance they deserve.

Badger’s story is proof that a heartworm diagnosis doesn’t have to be the end of a dog’s story. With treatment, care, and love, dogs like Badger can go on to live healthy, happy lives with the families who adore them. Right now, your gift can help more dogs receive the same lifesaving care and second chance that changed Badger’s life.
